Three new Mexican dicotyledons of possible ornamental interest
Abstract
Populus simaroa, Castilleja venusta and Montarnoa gigas are described as new based on material collected in the states of Guerrero and Mexico. Populus simaroa sp.n. it belongs to the Populus section and is possibly related to P. grandidentata Michx. It is particularly notable in its phenological behavior, since the tree loses its leaves at the beginning of the rainy season and is covered with foliage at the beginning of the dry period. It is known from a relatively wide area, but appears to be a scarce plant in general. Castilleja venusta sp.n. It is an annual plant, distinguished from the other members of the Epichroma section by the conspicuous lower lip of the corolla. It has only been collected in Cerro Teotepec, Guerrero. Montanoa gigas sp.n., a tree up to 20 m tall, belongs to the group of M. quadrangularis Sch. Beep. and is distinguished from M. hexagona Rob. & Greenrn. mainly in the morphology of its paleas. It is known from various localities in the Sierra Madre del Sur de Guerrero.
